St Andrew Holborn

The London Undone ‘City of London Churches’ podcast series: A journey around the magnificent and many churches of the City of London. Learn about their histories, architecture, associations, features and their spiritual lives today.

38. Oddly Christopher Wren’s largest parish church (now a guild church) is well hidden below Holborn Circus. But don’t miss out on St Andrew Holborn which has recently been refurbished and brought back to its former splendour. Connected to the church are Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, children’s champion Thomas Coram and novelist Charles Dickens. But most magically of all, the fresh underground water from one of the three wells in the crypt of the church is pumped up to the font.

With great thanks to Nick Hills for enlightening us.

    Dear Cathy

I remain a devotee of your podcast series on the City Churches. Thanks for this addition to the series.

In case you missed it, I recommend today’s edition of Sunday Worship on Radio 4 which was dedicated to the achievements of Sir Christopher Wren. Here is the link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001jbwz.

The programme is a fine blend of music, readings and items on particular churches, notably St Mary Aldermary and St Bride’s. But the gem at the heart of the programme was short talk about the significance of Wren by the incomparable Neil Macgregor. This starts at 19.28 into the programme and finishes at 27.17. My appreciation of Wren was significantly widened by Macgregor’s remarks. I commend it to you.

    Best wishes,

    Stephen (Wright)

    • Stephen, How lovely to hear from you. I have listeners from around the world but am always happy when people I know tune in too! Thank you for a) listening to the podcasts and b) for your superb recommendation. I’ve finally listened to it and indeed – a superb talk by Macgregor. Everyone… click the link… Stephen Wright is right! Warmest wishes as always, Cathy
